On 23rd February 2016, the Year 6 pupils of Cedar class were taken on two walks by members of the Witleys Oral History Group, around the village of Great Witley to learn more about the history of the village.
The morning walk saw the children starting at School, going across the three corner meadow, then up to the top of Abberley Hill alongside the original Red Marley Hillclimb track before returning to school.
After a break for lunch the second walk went from School, through the Quartergreen and Bowens field, along Stourport Road to the Hundred House, then up the hilll behind the Hundred House to take in the view across the village towards Woodbury Hill & Walsgrove Hill.
Thank you to the Oral History group for organising such a fantastic day for the pupils. They were all absolutely shattered by the end of the day, but had thoroughly enjoyed themselves. One child told me that he had a great day, because he had found out so many new things about Great Witley. Your time and energies are greatly appreciated by the staff and pupils at Great Witley CE Primary School.
It was a pleasure to pass on some of the stories and knowledge, which local people have provided to us, to the next generation – its exactly why the Witleys Oral History Group was formed. Thank you for your feedback and we hope the children and their families will continue to explore our local history through the school curriculum and of course our website!
